इस योजना का मुख्य उद्देश्य बुनयादी ढांचे की गुणवत्ता और जनभागीदारी के द्वारा ग्रामीण पाइप जलपूर्ति योजनाओं पर होगा. जिससे पूरे देश में सभी परिवारों तक पिने योग्य पानी पहुँचाया जा सके. सभी देशवासियों को पीने योग्य साफ़ और पर्याप्त पानी प्राप्त हो सके. इस मिशन के माध्यम से स्थाई, और नागरिक केंद्रीय जल वितरण के लिए राज्यों और केंद्र शासित प्रदेशों में अलग अलग ज्ञापनों पर समझोता किया जायेगा.
पानी के कनेक्शन में लगातार वृद्धि हुई है. पिछले पांच वर्षों में भारत के ग्रामीण और शहरी परिवारों के लिए नल के पानी कनेक्शन की लगातार वृद्धि हुई है. अक्टूबर 2024 में ग्रामीण परिवारों की संख्या बढ़कर 15.20 करोड़ हो गयी है. मिशन शुरू होने से पहले कनेक्शन संख्या 3.23 करोड़ थी.
